In the summer of '96, I was looking for a new toy to replace a '66 Pontiac Le Mans ragtop that I had just sold. I sold the Le Mans because it was really a can of worms and I just didn't have the desire to do the body-off that it needed. I started looking at ads for used cars when I came across a picture of a 928. Then, I saw how little that seller wanted for the car and lost control! I remember the first time that I ever saw a 928. It was way back in the early '80s. I was at a gas station when my family doctor pulled in to get gas in a brand new, white 928. Right behind him was another brand new, white 928 being driven by his wife! After seeing that car, I would forever wish that I could own one. All the lines were right for me. Fast forward to '96. There I was, looking for a new toy and I discovered that used 928s were now cheap enough for even me. I widened my search and compiled a list of about 8 that were for sale within the area. I began driving around to take a look at all of them. Alas, they were all totally neglected specimens that were more of a can of worms than the Pontiac that I'd just unloaded. I was down to the last one on the list and truthfully, I had very low expectations as it was the cheapest priced one on the list. Funny thing was it was located only about 3 miles from where I lived at that time. I drove over with a friend, Eric (fellow mtb'er), and we were both shocked when the seller opened his garage and backed it out. It was beautiful! An '84 "S" with a brand new shiny red paint job. I bought the car for $8300. It was completely stock, except for a K&N air filter.

I immediately took the car to a local 928 mechanic and had the t-belt replaced. That car was extremely reliable. I replaced normal wear items…tires, brake pads, oil and such. It was an automatic and was really relaxing to drive. It had plenty of "get up an' go". And it was quite a "head turner". But it was time for me to narrow down the horses in the stalls and in 2006, I sold it for $5000. I really feel like I got my money's worth by enjoying that car for as long as I did.
